I’m José Fernando Barrera De Plaza, a quantitative economist from Colombia (M.A. in Economics and Minor in Computational Mathematics, Universidad de los Andes). I build the data systems and models needed to study society, with a focus on migration, public policy and online discourse.
- Research: causal inference on public policy (Documento CEDE No. 42), topic modelling for doctoral research on migration at Harvard, and NLP to measure online xenophobia with El Barómetro de Xenofobia, whose team won 1st place at the Youth Leadership & Innovation Award for Migration (GFMD, 2021).
- Engineering: production data pipelines and applications with Python, Snowflake, Dagster, dbt and AWS.
- Teaching: analytics and programming courses at Universidad de los Andes since 2022.
- Next: doctoral research in computational social science, complex systems and economics.
